Black and Copper Wall Art – Oversized Charcoal Textured Look Canvas for Living Room

The whole surface is encrusted — thousands of small raised clumps worked over near-black, catching copper and bronze where the light finds the high points and going almost to nothing in the hollows. There is no subject and no horizon. It reads as a slab of something mineral that has oxidised slowly, somewhere between a rusted plate and a cooled lava field.

Dark art is difficult to buy because most of it photographs well and then disappears on the wall, swallowing light instead of returning any. What makes this one work is the metal. The copper is distributed finely enough that the piece keeps catching a lamp from across the room, so after dark it is the brightest thing on a dark wall rather than a black rectangle.

It wants a dark or earthy room — a clay wall, a charcoal sofa, stained oak. Against bright white it will read as a hole. We have photographed it in a living room, a dining room, an entryway, a home office and a kitchen, all of them dark, and leaned in close so you can see the crust.

A note on the finish, so there are no surprises. The standard canvas is a printed reproduction with a sculpted, textured look — the surface itself is smooth. If you want texture you can actually feel, choose Hand Painted Textured Original on this page and an artist builds the piece by hand in oil on linen, with real raised paint. Hand Embellished sits between the two: real oil worked over the print by hand, so the brushwork stands slightly proud of the surface.

Being square, it centres cleanly above a sofa, a bed, a console or a mantel where a wide piece would overhang the furniture beneath it.
