Black and Gold Wall Art – Oversized Charred Timber Textured Look Canvas for Living Room

Planks of blackened timber stood side by side, the grain still legible under the char, with gold running down through the splits where the wood has opened as it burned. The black is not flat — it shifts from soot to a deep brown-black along the grain, and the gold is brightest where the cracks are widest.

The look comes from shou sugi ban, the Japanese method of charring cedar to preserve it. The surface that protects the wood is also the thing that makes it beautiful, which is a rare and old idea and the reason this reads as serious rather than decorative.

It is the darkest piece we make, and it is built for a room that is already dark. Over a charcoal sofa or against a deep wall it does not float the way pale art does — it settles in and reads as one continuous object, with the gold doing the work a lamp would otherwise have to do.

A note on the finish, so there are no surprises. The standard canvas is a printed reproduction with a sculpted, textured look — the surface itself is smooth. If you want texture you can actually feel, choose Hand Painted Textured Original on this page and an artist builds the piece by hand in oil on linen, with real raised paint. Hand Embellished sits between the two: real oil worked over the print by hand, so the brushwork stands slightly proud of the surface.

It is a 2:1 panoramic, the shape made for the long wall — above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed, where a square piece leaves dead space at either end.
